Month: August 2011
A Wonderful Evening at the Crescent Secret Supper Club
Earlier this month we went along to Crescent Secret Supper Club hosted by Jethro & Calum – friends and recent graduates – in Calum’s mum’s lovely home in central Edinburgh.
If you’re a regular reader you’ll know how much I love these wonderful dinners hosted by cooking enthusiasts in their own homes. It’s always a pleasure. And it’s very exciting to see more pop-up restaurants popping up in Edinburgh. We’ve so far tried Charlie & Evelyn’s table, Kitchen Porters and My Home Supper Club all of which have been superb.
All but one of the food pictures are from Jethro & Calum’s website. You can see more pictures here.
Calum and Jethro really like to give themselves a challenge. As if cooking for 12 paying guests (harsher critics than friends!) weren’t enough, they offer choice for each course. To start we chose from scotch quails eggs with mustard mayonnaise and cress or roasted pepper and tomato soup with homemade basil bread roll.
I had the quails eggs which were divine. Crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, without the eggs being overdone. A mouthwatering start.
For main, the vegetarian option was grilled haloumi with butternut squash and sweet potato rosti with green beans. As you can see it looked beautiful and those who chose it said it was delicious.
I opted for the pork loin and apple sauce with gnocchi and broad beans in a pancetta basket. What a treat! I particularly liked the inventiveness of the pancetta baskets. They were super. And the gnocchi within was crispy rather than soggy, which is how I prefer it. A real triumph
To finish, orange possett with a chocolate-dipped olive oil biscuit and caramelised orange slice. Rich and creamy this was an mmmm and mmmm heavenly note on which to end a delicious meal.
Our hosts Calum (left) and Jethro joined us afterwards for a glass of wine. They’re such lovely guys. They are only doing Crescent during August. It’s proving very popular and although there are dinners every Friday and Saturday evening. There are now only spaces left for one date. Find out more here
And I can’t end without a mention for the lovely Becky, she and Ewan (Calum’s brother) were wonderfully attentive and looked after us all evening while Calum and Jethro did fiddly things with quails eggs and made baskets out of pancetta for our pleasure. It was worth it guys. A lovely evening. Go if you can!

Flying high at SKYbar
At the end of July over 50 us had a fabulous evening at SKYbar. This unique venue with incredible castle views is open to the public on the last Thursday of each month at The Point Hotel.
I don’t have pictures from last night so here’s a picture from January showing the fabulous views.
Great views from SKYbar from my pre SKYbar launch visit in January 2011
We loved it so much we’re going back this month, on Thursday 25 August. The cocktails were delicious and SKYbar also does a barbecue so you don’t need to rush home for dinner first.
As if the great views, brilliant company and barbie were not enough, we also have a complimentary drink thrown in.

Come along and meet us for a drink. All the details are on our website here.

One of my first, and favourite munros. A good path up and fantastic views. This is a moderate climb suitable for everyone. There are a few steep parts but it’s mostly gradually ascent. The picture above is from the last time SBC climbed Ben Lomond in April 2009. It was a beautiful sunny day, lets hope we get the same again this time.

A friend in London told me about this show she saw there and can’t wait to see again in Edinburgh. It’s incredible in the true sense of the word.
“Urban, flamboyant circus of awe-inspiring acrobatics and dance. A tapestry of their personal stories where exuberant young Colombian artists charge the circus with their perfectly mastered yet volcanic energy. Co-production Roundhouse London.”
