A Wonderful Evening at the Crescent Secret Supper Club

Posted on Updated on

Earlier this month we went along to Crescent Secret Supper Club hosted by Jethro & Calum – friends and recent graduates – in Calum’s mum’s lovely home in central Edinburgh.

If you’re a regular reader you’ll know how much I love these wonderful dinners hosted by cooking enthusiasts in their own homes. It’s always a pleasure. And it’s very exciting to see more pop-up restaurants popping up in Edinburgh. We’ve so far tried Charlie & Evelyn’s table, Kitchen Porters and My Home Supper Club all of which have been superb.

All but one of the food pictures are from Jethro & Calum’s website. You can see more pictures here.

Calum and Jethro really like to give themselves a challenge. As if cooking for 12 paying guests (harsher critics than friends!) weren’t enough, they offer choice for each course. To start we chose from scotch quails eggs with mustard mayonnaise and cress or roasted pepper and tomato soup with homemade basil bread roll.

Quail eggs

I had the quails eggs which were divine. Crispy on the outside and soft in the middle, without the eggs being overdone. A mouthwatering start.

For main, the vegetarian option was grilled haloumi with butternut squash and sweet potato rosti with green beans. As you can see it looked beautiful and those who chose it said it was delicious.

Haloumi

I opted for the pork loin and apple sauce with gnocchi and broad beans in a pancetta basket. What a treat! I particularly liked the inventiveness of the pancetta baskets. They were super. And the gnocchi within was crispy rather than soggy, which is how I prefer it. A real triumph

Pork

To finish, orange possett with a chocolate-dipped olive oil biscuit and caramelised orange slice.  Rich and creamy this was an mmmm and mmmm heavenly note on which to end a delicious meal.

Organge posset

Our hosts Calum (left) and Jethro joined us afterwards for a glass of wine. They’re such lovely guys. They are only doing Crescent during August. It’s proving very popular and although there are dinners every Friday and Saturday evening. There are now only spaces left for one date. Find out more here

And I can’t end without a mention for the lovely Becky, she and Ewan (Calum’s brother) were wonderfully attentive and looked after us all evening while Calum and Jethro did fiddly things with quails eggs and made baskets out of pancetta for our pleasure. It was worth it guys. A lovely evening. Go if you can!

What a deliciously fun evening we spent with Aoife of My Home Supper Club and her husband Damian
I simply adore these wonderful secret supper clubs, hosted by people passionate and food, cooking and entertaining. There’s something intimate and special about dining at someone’s home rather than a restaurant. I know many of you love them too as the spaces are booked within hours when we add a supper club outing to our events list.

In a beautifully candlelit room, on a dark and thundery Summer’s evening we enjoyed super food in the Behans’ beautiful home. Here’s our Bastille Day inspired menu in pictures.

To start, chicory, apple, walnut and roquefort salad

P1050997
Coq au vin de bourgogne

A delicious warm green salad and roast potatoes (not pictured)

And the highlight for me, the croqembouche. Made with lots of love over 2 days a tower of cream filled profiteroles. Over 150 of them! The chou pastry, the cream, the chocolate, the spun sugar combined to produce food heaven.  It was love at first sight.
